Be the best that you can be!

Promoting British Values

The DfE require that schools need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values”

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, as follows:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Further guidance is available on the link below.

As a school it is our responsibility to guide our children to understand their roles and responsibilities as young citizens. The ethos of our school is such that we continually emphasise the importance of developing the whole child to help them to make a positive contribution, both in and out of school and, as such, we also promote the following values

  • Equality
  • Trust
  • Respect
  • Empathy
  • Justice
  • Democracy
  • Fairness
  • Tolerance
  • Courage
  • Optimism
  • Perserverance
  • Responsibility
  • Co-Operation
  • Honesty

At Tameside, being a member of the school community means that our pupils will encounter these values through everyday school life. We will use the curriculum to create opportunities to learn and explore these values and are committed to helping our children prepare for their life journey.  We will do this in the following ways:

  • Assemblies (pupil & adult led),
  • PSHE lessons,
  • R.E. lessons,
  • during all other lessons where content, themes and stories may be linked to the values listed above,
  • charity work,
  • themed days/weeks,
  • team building activities, group work,
  • allocation of jobs and responsibilities (e.g. school council, Eco-buddies, etc).

We feel that the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of children at Tameside is core to supporting our children to fulfill our mission statement: “Be the best that you can be.”
